Hot Water Won't Turn Off In Bathtub: Essential Troubleshooting Guide

When your hot water faucet refuses to turn off, it can be a frustrating and potentially dangerous situation. A constantly running faucet can waste water, increase your utility bills, and even lead to flooding. Fortunately, in most cases, this problem can be resolved with a little troubleshooting and basic plumbing skills.

1. Check the Handle

The first step is to check the handle of the faucet. If it is loose or wobbly, it may not be fully engaging the valve, preventing it from closing properly. Tighten the handle using an adjustable wrench or pliers, being careful not to overtighten.

2. Replace the Cartridge

Many modern faucets use a cartridge-style valve. If the handle does not control the water flow, the cartridge may be faulty. Replacing the cartridge is a relatively straightforward process. Shut off the water supply, remove the handle, and unscrew the old cartridge. Install the new cartridge and reassemble the faucet.

3. Inspect the Valve Seat

The valve seat is the surface against which the cartridge or valve stem closes to stop the water flow. Over time, the valve seat can become damaged or worn, preventing the valve from sealing properly. If you suspect the valve seat is the issue, you may need to call a plumber to repair or replace it.

4. Check the Washer

Some faucets use a washer to create a seal between the valve stem and the valve seat. If the washer is worn or damaged, it may allow water to leak through. Replacing the washer is a simple and inexpensive fix. Remove the old washer and replace it with a new one of the same size and shape.

5. Replace the O-Rings

O-rings are small rubber seals that create watertight connections in plumbing fixtures. If an O-ring is damaged or worn, it can cause a leak. Inspect the O-rings around the faucet handle and valve stem. If any O-rings appear damaged, replace them with new ones.

6. Call a Plumber

If you have tried all of the above steps and the hot water still won't turn off, it is time to call a professional plumber. A plumber can diagnose the underlying cause of the problem and perform any necessary repairs.
