Slow Bathtub Drain? Drano Not Working? Here's What You Can Do
A slow-draining bathtub can be a frustrating and inconvenient problem. Not only is it a nuisance, but it can also be a sign of a more serious plumbing issue. If you've tried using Drano or another commercial drain cleaner and it hasn't worked, don't despair. There are still a few things you can do to try to clear the drain yourself before calling a plumber.
1. Boiling Water
One of the simplest and most effective ways to clear a slow-draining bathtub drain is to pour boiling water down the drain. The hot water will help to dissolve any grease or soap scum that may be clogging the drain. To do this, bring a pot of water to a boil and then carefully pour it down the drain. Be sure to wear gloves and eye protection when doing this, as the boiling water can cause serious burns.
2. Baking Soda and Vinegar
Another effective home remedy for a slow-draining bathtub drain is to use baking soda and vinegar. The baking soda and vinegar will create a chemical reaction that will help to break down the clog. To do this, pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar. Cover the drain with a stopper or a cloth and let it sit for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, pour a pot of boiling water down the drain to flush out the clog.
3. Plunger
If the boiling water and baking soda and vinegar solutions don't work, you can try using a plunger to clear the drain. To do this, place the plunger over the drain and push and pull the plunger up and down vigorously. The suction created by the plunger will help to dislodge the clog. Be sure to use a plunger that is designed for use on sinks and drains, as a regular toilet plunger may not be strong enough to clear a bathtub drain.
4. Drain Snake
If the plunger doesn't work, you can try using a drain snake to clear the clog. A drain snake is a long, flexible cable with a hook or auger on the end. To use a drain snake, insert the snake into the drain and turn the crank to feed the snake down the drain. When the snake reaches the clog, use the hook or auger to break up the clog. Once the clog is broken up, flush the drain with hot water to remove any debris.
5. Call a Plumber
If you've tried all of the above methods and the drain is still slow, it's time to call a plumber. A plumber will be able to use professional tools and techniques to clear the drain and get your bathtub draining properly again.
