Replace a Bathtub Faucet Cartridge: A Comprehensive Guide

Updating the cartridge in your bathtub faucet is a relatively simple task that can be completed in just a few steps. Here's a detailed guide to help you through the process:

Step 1: Gather the necessary tools.

You'll need the following tools:

Adjustable wrench
Phillips head screwdriver
Flat head screwdriver
New faucet cartridge

Step 2: Turn off the water supply.

Locate the shutoff valves under the sink or behind the faucet. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water supply to the faucet.

Step 3: Open the faucet.

This will release any remaining water pressure in the faucet.

Step 4: Remove the handle and trim plate.

Using the Phillips head screwdriver, remove the screw that secures the handle to the faucet. Then, pull the handle straight up to remove it. Next, use the flat head screwdriver to pry off the trim plate around the base of the handle.

Step 5: Remove the cartridge.

Using the adjustable wrench, loosen the bonnet nut that secures the cartridge in place. Once the nut is loose, pull the cartridge straight out of the faucet body.

Step 6: Install the new cartridge.

Insert the new cartridge into the faucet body. Make sure that the new cartridge is oriented in the same way as the old one. Tighten the bonnet nut using the adjustable wrench.

Step 7: Reassemble the faucet.

Replace the trim plate and handle. Tighten the screw that secures the handle to the faucet.

Step 8: Turn on the water supply.

Slowly turn on the shutoff valves to turn on the water supply to the faucet. Check for any leaks around the cartridge and handle.
