Preparing for the Job

Before starting, gather the necessary tools and prepare the work area. This will make the process smoother and prevent accidental messes. Essential items include a drain snake (either manual or motorized), a bucket, rubber gloves, old towels, and a flashlight.

Place the old towels around the base of the bathtub to protect the floor from water and debris. Put on the rubber gloves to protect hands from bacteria and grime. Having a bucket nearby is essential for collecting the debris removed from the drain.

Removing the Drain Stopper

Different bathtub drains have different stopper mechanisms. Some stoppers are held in place by a setscrew, typically located underneath the overflow plate. Others have a push-and-lock mechanism that requires pressing down and turning to release. Consult the manufacturer's instructions for the specific bathtub model if unsure about the removal process. Inserting the Drain Snake

Breaking up or Retrieving the Clog

The rotating action of the snake will either break up the clog, allowing water to flow freely, or hook onto it, enabling retrieval. If the clog feels particularly stubborn, try retracting the snake slightly and then pushing forward again with a rotating motion. This can help dislodge stubborn blockages.

Removing the Snake and Testing the Drain

Once the snake has broken through or hooked onto the clog, slowly and carefully retract the snake from the drain. Clean the snake with a disinfectant and rinse it thoroughly with water. Inspect the retrieved debris to determine the cause of the clog, which can help prevent future occurrences. Using a Drain Snake for Overflow Drains

Sometimes, the clog may be located in the overflow drain. For these situations, insert the drain snake into the overflow opening instead of the main drain. Follow the same process of rotating and pushing the snake to break up or retrieve the clog. After removing the snake, test both the main drain and the overflow drain to ensure they are both clear.
