How to Unclog a Bathtub With a Snake
A clogged bathtub is a common household problem that can be frustrating to deal with. If you're dealing with a stubborn clog, a drain snake is a great tool to have on hand. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you unclog your bathtub with a snake:
Materials You'll Need:
- Drain snake
- Bucket
- Flashlight (optional)
- Gloves (optional)
Safety Precautions:
Before you start, put on gloves if you have them, as the snake and drain can be dirty. If the clog is particularly bad, you may want to wear a face mask to avoid inhaling any fumes or debris.
Step 1: Remove the Drain Stopper
Start by removing the bathtub’s drain stopper. If the stopper is stuck, you can use a pair of pliers to gently pry it loose. Be careful not to damage the drain.
Step 2: Insert the Snake into the Drain
Insert the snake into the drain hole. If you have a flashlight, shine it into the drain to help you see where the clog is located. Slowly feed the snake down the drain, turning the handle clockwise as you go. This will help the snake to grip the clog and break it up.
Step 3: Work the Snake Through the Clog
Once you feel the snake reach the clog, start working it back and forth. You may need to use some force to break up the clog. If the clog is particularly stubborn, you may need to use a larger snake or call a plumber.
Step 4: Remove the Clog
Once the clog is broken up, you can slowly pull the snake out of the drain. As you pull the snake out, the clog will come out with it. Place the clog in a bucket for disposal.
Step 5: Flush the Drain
Once the clog is removed, flush the drain with hot water to clear away any remaining debris. You can also use a drain cleaner to help dissolve any remaining clogs.
Tips for Preventing Clogs:
To prevent future clogs, follow these tips:
- Avoid putting hair, soap scum, and other debris down the drain.
- Use a drain strainer to catch hair and other debris.
- Clean your bathtub drain regularly with a drain cleaner.
- If you have a slow drain, try pouring a cup of baking soda and a cup of vinegar down the drain. Let it sit for 30 minutes, then flush with hot water.
