How to Replace a Kohler Bathtub Faucet Cartridge

A Kohler bathtub faucet cartridge is responsible for controlling the flow of water and temperature. Over time, these cartridges can wear out, leading to problems like leaking, dripping, or difficulty adjusting the water flow. When these issues arise, replacing the cartridge is often the most effective solution. This article will guide you step-by-step through the process of replacing a Kohler bathtub faucet cartridge.

1. Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials

Before starting the replacement process, ensure you have the following tools and materials readily available:

  • A Phillips head screwdriver
  • A pair of adjustable pliers
  • A wrench (size appropriate for the faucet handle)
  • A basin or bucket for catching water
  • A new Kohler bathtub faucet cartridge (ensure it is compatible with your faucet model)
  • Teflon tape or pipe thread sealant (optional)
  • A rag or towel for cleaning

2. Shut Off the Water Supply

The first step is to shut off the water supply to the bathtub faucet. Locate the shut-off valve for the faucet, usually found underneath the sink. Turn the valve clockwise to completely shut off the water flow. Once the water supply is shut off, open the faucet to drain any remaining water in the pipes.

3. Remove the Faucet Handle

With the water supply off, you can now remove the faucet handle. Most Kohler bathtub faucets have a screw located underneath the handle that secures it in place. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, unscrew this screw and carefully lift off the handle.

4. Remove the Faucet Stem

Once the handle is removed, you will see the faucet stem protruding from the faucet body. The stem is connected to the cartridge and holds it in place. Using adjustable pliers, grip the stem and twist it counterclockwise to loosen it. Once the stem is loose, remove it completely.

5. Remove the Old Cartridge

With the stem removed, you can now access the old cartridge. The cartridge is typically held in place by a retaining nut or clip. Use a wrench to unscrew the retaining nut or carefully pry off the clip, depending on the design of your faucet. Once the retaining nut or clip is removed, the old cartridge can be pulled out of the faucet body.

6. Install the New Cartridge

Now that the old cartridge is removed, you can install the new one. Before installing the new cartridge, inspect the threads of the faucet body and the cartridge for any debris or corrosion. Clean them off if necessary. If using Teflon tape or pipe thread sealant, apply a few wraps of tape or a thin layer of sealant to the threads of the cartridge.

Insert the new cartridge into the faucet body, making sure it is properly aligned. Once the cartridge is in place, reinstall the retaining nut or clip, tightening it securely.

7. Reinstall the Faucet Stem and Handle

With the new cartridge installed, reinstall the faucet stem. Thread the stem back into the faucet body and tighten it clockwise. Once the stem is secured, reattach the faucet handle and screw it back into place.

8. Turn On the Water Supply

Carefully turn on the water supply at the shut-off valve, checking for any leaks at the connection points. Test the faucet by running hot and cold water to ensure proper flow and temperature control.

If any leaks are present, tighten the connection points again or reapply Teflon tape or pipe thread sealant.

Replacing a Kohler bathtub faucet cartridge is a relatively simple DIY project that can save you money and time. By following these steps carefully and using the appropriate tools and materials, you can ensure a smooth and successful replacement. Remember to always shut off the water supply before starting any work on your plumbing system.
