How to Replace a Bathtub Spout Without a Diverter
Is your bathtub spout leaking or dripping? Replacing it is a relatively easy DIY project that can save you money and time. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to replace a bathtub spout without a diverter:
Materials You'll Need:
- New bathtub spout
- Adjustable wrench
- Plumber's putty
- Teflon tape
Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply
Locate the shut-off valves under the sink or behind the access panel in the bathtub enclosure. Turn off both the hot and cold water supply valves.
Step 2: Remove the Old Spout
Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut that holds the spout in place. Once the nut is loose, carefully pull the spout straight out of the wall.
Step 3: Clean the Spout Connection
Use a damp cloth to clean the threads on the spout connection where the new spout will be installed. Remove any old plumber's putty or debris.
Step 4: Apply Plumber's Putty
Roll a small amount of plumber's putty into a ball. Place the putty around the base of the new spout, ensuring it makes a watertight seal.
Step 5: Wrap the Threads with Teflon Tape
Apply several layers of Teflon tape to the threads on the new spout. This will help prevent leaks.
Step 6: Insert the New Spout
Carefully insert the new spout into the connection and hand-tighten it until it is snug.
Step 7: Tighten the Spout Nut
Use the adjustable wrench to tighten the nut that holds the spout in place. Be careful not to overtighten, as this can damage the nut or the spout.
Step 8: Turn On the Water Supply
Slowly turn on the hot and cold water supply valves and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, your new bathtub spout is successfully installed.
Tips:
- If you encounter any leaks, tighten the nut further or apply more plumber's putty.
- Replace the spout if it is damaged or corroded.
- Consider hiring a plumber if you are not comfortable working with plumbing fixtures.
