How to Replace a Bathtub Faucet Stem
A leaky faucet is a common plumbing issue that can waste water and increase your utility bills. Replacing the faucet stem is a relatively simple repair that can be completed in about an hour. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it:
Tools and Materials
- Replacement faucet stem
- Adjustable wrench
- Allen wrench
- Screwdriver
- Rags or towels
Steps
1. Shut off the water supply
Locate the shutoff valves beneath the sink and turn them clockwise to shut off the water supply to the faucet.
2. Remove the handle
Use an Allen wrench or screwdriver to remove the set screw or cap on the top of the handle. Pull the handle straight up to remove it.
3. Remove the packing nut
Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the packing nut located beneath the handle. Remove the packing nut by hand.
4. Remove the stem
Grip the base of the stem with an adjustable wrench and turn it counterclockwise to remove it.
5. Install the new stem
Apply a small amount of plumber's grease to the threads of the new stem. Insert the new stem into the faucet body and tighten it clockwise by hand.
6. Install the packing nut
Hand-tighten the packing nut onto the stem. Use an adjustable wrench to tighten the packing nut further, but do not overtighten it.
7. Install the handle
Push the handle back onto the stem and secure it with the set screw or cap.
8. Turn on the water supply
Open the shutoff valves beneath the sink to turn on the water supply. Check for any leaks and tighten the packing nut if necessary.
Tips
- If the stem is stuck, you can try soaking it in vinegar or penetrating oil for a few minutes before attempting to remove it.
- Replace both stems if one of them is leaking to prevent future problems.
- If you are not comfortable replacing the faucet stem yourself, it is best to call a plumber.
