How to Replace a Two Handle Bathtub Faucet
Replacing a two handle bathtub faucet is a relatively simple plumbing project that can be completed in a few hours. With the right tools and a little know-how, you can save yourself the cost of hiring a plumber. Here are the steps on how to replace a two handle bathtub faucet:
Tools and Materials:
- Adjustable wrench
- Channel lock pliers
- Plumber's putty
- Teflon tape
- New two handle bathtub faucet
Step 1: Turn off the Water Supply
Before you start working on the faucet, you need to turn off the water supply. There should be two shut-off valves under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise until they are completely closed.
Step 2: Remove the Old Faucet
Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts that hold the faucet handles in place. Once the nuts are loose, you can remove the handles. Next, use the channel lock pliers to loosen the nuts that hold the faucet body in place. Once the nuts are loose, you can remove the faucet body.
Step 3: Clean the Mounting Surface
Once the old faucet is removed, you need to clean the mounting surface. Use a damp cloth to remove any dirt or debris. Then, apply a bead of plumber's putty around the base of the new faucet.
Step 4: Install the New Faucet
Place the new faucet body on the mounting surface and tighten the nuts until they are snug. Next, install the faucet handles and tighten the nuts until they are snug.
Step 5: Turn on the Water Supply
Once the new faucet is installed, you can turn on the water supply. Slowly open the shut-off valves until the water is flowing through the faucet. Check for any leaks and tighten any nuts that may be loose.
Step 6: Test the Faucet
Turn on both handles of the faucet and check for proper operation. Make sure that the water temperature is correct and that the flow rate is adequate. If there are any problems, you may need to adjust the nuts or call a plumber.
