How to Repair a Leaking Single-Handle Bathtub Faucet
A leaky bathtub faucet can be a real nuisance, not to mention a waste of water. If you're not comfortable calling a plumber, you can usually fix a leaky single-handle faucet yourself with a few simple tools and a little know-how. Here are the steps on how to repair a leaking single-handle bathtub faucet:
Tools and Materials
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Adjustable wrench
- Faucet cartridge puller (optional)
- New faucet cartridge
- Plumber's putty
- Rags
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Turn off the water supply. There will be two shut-off valves under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water supply.
2. Remove the handle. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screw that is holding the handle in place. Once the screw is removed, pull the handle straight up to remove it.
3. Remove the cartridge. Using an adjustable wrench, loosen the packing nut that is holding the cartridge in place. Once the packing nut is loose, you can pull the cartridge straight out.
4. Inspect the cartridge. Check the cartridge for any damage. If the cartridge is damaged, it will need to be replaced.
5. Install the new cartridge. If the cartridge is not damaged, you can reinstall it. Apply a thin layer of plumber's putty to the base of the cartridge and insert it into the faucet body. Tighten the packing nut using an adjustable wrench.
6. Reinstall the handle. Slide the handle back onto the faucet body and tighten the screw that is holding it in place.
7. Turn on the water supply. Turn both shut-off valves under the sink counterclockwise to turn on the water supply.
8. Check for leaks. Once the water is turned on, check for any leaks. If there are any leaks, you may need to tighten the packing nut further.
That's it! You have now successfully repaired your leaking single-handle bathtub faucet.
