How to Remove Old Bathtub Drain Assembly

A worn or damaged bathtub drain assembly can cause leaks, slow drainage, or even complete blockage. Replacing the drain assembly is a relatively straightforward task that can be completed in a few hours. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to remove the old drain assembly:

Materials Needed:

Adjustable wrench
Pliers
Bucket
Rag
New drain assembly

Step 1: Prepare the Bathtub

Turn off the water supply to the bathtub. Open the faucet to release any remaining water in the lines. Place a bucket under the drain to catch any water that may leak out.

Step 2: Remove the Overflow Plate

Locate the overflow plate, which is typically a small, round cover on the side of the tub near the top. Use pliers to gently pry the plate loose. It may be held in place by screws, so remove those first if necessary.

Step 3: Remove the Drain Stopper

If there is a pop-up drain stopper, remove it by pulling it up. If it's a twist-and-lift type, twist it counterclockwise and lift it out.

Step 4: Loosen the Drain Assembly

Place an adjustable wrench around the base of the drain assembly. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to loosen the assembly. It may be necessary to use some force, but be careful not to damage the tub.
