How to Install a Pop-up Bathtub Drain

Replacing a bathtub drain is a relatively simple plumbing project that can be completed in an afternoon. Here are the steps on how to install a pop-up bathtub drain.

Tools and Materials

Adjustable wrench
Channel locks
Plumber's putty
New pop-up bathtub drain
Bucket

Step 1: Remove the Old Drain

Start by turning off the water supply to the bathtub. Then, place the bucket under the drain to catch any water that may spill out. Using the adjustable wrench, loosen the nut that is holding the drain in place. Once the nut is loose, you can remove the old drain by hand.

Step 2: Clean the Drain Hole

Once the old drain is removed, clean the drain hole of any debris. You can use a damp cloth or a sponge to do this. Make sure that the drain hole is clean and dry before proceeding to the next step.

Step 3: Apply Plumber's Putty

Roll a small piece of plumber's putty into a thin rope and apply it around the base of the new drain. The plumber's putty will help to seal the drain and prevent leaks.

Step 4: Install the New Drain

Insert the new drain into the drain hole. Make sure that the plumber's putty is evenly distributed around the base of the drain. Hand-tighten the nut that is holding the drain in place as much as you can.

Step 6: Test the Drain
