How to Install a Bathtub Spout With Diverter
Installing a bathtub spout with a diverter is a relatively simple plumbing project that can be completed in a few hours. A diverter allows you to switch the flow of water from the spout to the showerhead, making it a convenient feature for any bathroom.
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Adjustable wrench
- Pipe wrench
- Teflon tape
- Plumber's putty
- New bathtub spout with diverter
- Replacement O-rings (if necessary)
Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply
Before you begin any work, make sure to turn off the water supply to the bathroom. This will prevent any water from leaking out when you remove the old spout.
Step 2: Remove the Old Spout
Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut that holds the old spout in place. Once the nut is loose, you can remove the spout by hand. If the spout is stuck, you can use a pipe wrench to gently pry it loose.
Step 3: Inspect the Diverter Valve
Once the old spout is removed, you will need to inspect the diverter valve. The diverter valve is located behind the spout and it controls the flow of water between the spout and the showerhead. If the diverter valve is damaged or leaking, you will need to replace it.
Step 4: Install the New Spout
Apply a thin layer of Teflon tape to the threads of the new spout. This will help to create a watertight seal. Once the Teflon tape is applied, you can screw the new spout into place. Hand-tighten the spout as much as possible, then use an adjustable wrench to further tighten the nut.
Step 5: Install the Diverter
If you are replacing the diverter valve, you will need to install it before you can install the new spout. To install the diverter valve, simply screw it into place behind the spout. Make sure to apply a thin layer of Teflon tape to the threads of the diverter valve before you screw it in.
Step 6: Test the Spout and Diverter
Once the new spout and diverter are installed, turn on the water supply and test them. Make sure that the spout and diverter are working properly and that there are no leaks.
Tips:
- If the bathtub spout has a built-in diverter, you will not need to install a separate diverter valve.
- If the old spout is leaking, it may be possible to repair it by replacing the O-rings.
- If you are not comfortable working with plumbing, it is best to call a plumber to install the bathtub spout and diverter for you.
