How to Fix a Leaking Bathtub Faucet
A leaky bathtub faucet is a common plumbing problem that can waste water and increase your utility bills. Not to mention, the constant dripping sound can be annoying. The good news is that fixing a leaking bathtub faucet is usually a relatively easy and inexpensive DIY project. Here are the steps:
1. Gather your tools and materials
To fix a leaking bathtub faucet, you will need the following tools and materials:
- Adjustable wrench
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flat head screwdriver
- Replacement faucet cartridge or washer
- Plumber's putty
- Towels or rags
2. Turn off the water supply
Before you start working on the faucet, you need to turn off the water supply. There is usually a shut-off valve under the sink. Turn the valve clockwise to turn off the water.
3. Remove the faucet handle
Once the water supply is turned off, you can remove the faucet handle. Most faucet handles are held in place by a screw. Use a screwdriver to remove the screw, then pull the handle off.
4. Remove the faucet cartridge or washer
Once the faucet handle is removed, you will be able to see the faucet cartridge or washer. The cartridge is a cylindrical-shaped part that is located inside the faucet body. The washer is a rubber or plastic disc that is located at the base of the faucet handle. To remove the cartridge, use an adjustable wrench to loosen the retaining nut. To remove the washer, use a flat head screwdriver to pry it out.
5. Inspect the cartridge or washer
Once you have removed the cartridge or washer, inspect it for damage. If the cartridge or washer is damaged, it will need to be replaced.
6. Install the new cartridge or washer
If the cartridge or washer is damaged, you will need to install a new one. To install the new cartridge, insert it into the faucet body and tighten the retaining nut. To install the new washer, place it at the base of the faucet handle.
7. Reinstall the faucet handle
Once the new cartridge or washer is installed, you can reinstall the faucet handle. To do this, simply push the handle onto the stem and tighten the screw.
8. Turn on the water supply
Once the faucet handle is reinstalled, you can turn on the water supply. Turn the valve under the sink counterclockwise to turn on the water.
9. Check for leaks
Once the water is turned on, check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the packing nut or replace the washer.
