How to Fix a Drain Pipe Under a Bathtub

A clogged or leaking drain pipe under a bathtub can be a major inconvenience. However, with the right tools and a little bit of know-how, it is a problem that you can fix yourself. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to fix a drain pipe under a bathtub:

Tools and materials you will need:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Plumber's putty
  • New drain pipe (if necessary)
  • Bucket
  • Rags

Step 1: Turn off the water supply

Before you start working on the drain pipe, it is important to turn off the water supply to the bathtub. You can do this by locating the water shut-off valves under the sink or behind the bathtub. Once the water is turned off, open the faucet to release any remaining water in the pipes.

Step 2: Remove the overflow plate

The overflow plate is the small circular or oval plate located near the top of the bathtub. It is held in place by a few screws. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws and then pull the overflow plate off.

Step 3: Remove the drain stopper

The drain stopper is the part that you pull up or down to close or open the drain. It is usually held in place by a screw or a nut. Use a screwdriver or a wrench to remove the screw or nut and then pull the drain stopper out.

Step 4: Disconnect the drain pipe

The drain pipe is the pipe that connects the drain stopper to the drain in the floor. It is usually held in place by a slip nut. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the slip nut and then pull the drain pipe off.

Step 5: Inspect the drain pipe

Once you have removed the drain pipe, inspect it for any damage. If the pipe is cracked or broken, you will need to replace it. If the pipe is not damaged, you can simply clean it out.

Step 6: Apply plumber's putty

If you are replacing the drain pipe, you will need to apply plumber's putty to the new pipe. Plumber's putty is a sealant that helps to prevent leaks. Roll out a small piece of plumber's putty and then wrap it around the end of the new drain pipe.

Step 7: Reinstall the drain pipe

Insert the new drain pipe into the drain in the floor. Tighten the slip nut to secure the pipe in place.

Step 8: Reinstall the drain stopper

Insert the drain stopper into the drain pipe. Tighten the screw or nut to secure the drain stopper in place.

Step 9: Reinstall the overflow plate

Replace the overflow plate over the drain opening. Tighten the screws to secure the plate in place.

Step 10: Turn on the water supply

Turn the water supply back on and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, your drain pipe is now fixed.

Tips:

  • If you are not comfortable working on plumbing, it is best to call a plumber.
  • Be sure to wear gloves and eye protection when working on plumbing.
  • Have a bucket and rags on hand to catch any water that may leak.
