How to Fix a Dripping Bathtub Faucet

A dripping bathtub faucet is not only a nuisance but can also waste water and increase your utility bills. While it may seem like a daunting task, fixing a dripping faucet is relatively straightforward with the right tools and instructions. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you resolve this issue.

Step 1: Gather Tools and Materials

Before you begin, gather the necessary tools and materials:

  1. Adjustable wrench
  2. Flathead screwdriver
  3. Replacement washer(s) specific to your faucet
  4. Plumber's tape
  5. Cloth or rag

Step 2: Identify the Leak

Turn on the faucet and observe where the water is leaking. This will help you determine which components need attention.

Step 3: Shut Off Water Supply

Locate the water supply valves underneath the sink or behind the bathtub. Turn the valves clockwise to shut off the water supply to the faucet.

Step 4: Disassemble the Faucet Handle

Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the handle screw located at the base of the handle. Gently lift the handle to expose the cartridge or stem.

Step 5: Remove and Replace the Washer

If the leak is coming from the handle, remove the cartridge or stem and inspect the washer. Replace the worn-out washer with a new one of the same size and material.

Step 6: Reassemble the Faucet

Insert the cartridge or stem back into the faucet and secure the handle with the screw.

Step 7: Seal the Connections

Apply a thin layer of plumber's tape to the threads of the faucet spout and any other threaded connections. This will create a watertight seal.

Step 8: Reattach the Spout

If the leak is coming from the spout, unscrew the spout using the adjustable wrench. Remove the old washer and replace it with a new one.

Step 9: Reconnect Water Supply

Turn the water supply valves counterclockwise to reconnect the water supply to the faucet.

Step 10: Check for Leaks

Turn on the faucet and check for any leaks. If the faucet is still dripping, repeat the steps to ensure all components are correctly installed and sealed.

Preventive Measures

To prevent future dripping faucets, consider implementing the following measures:

  • Use a low-pressure shower head to reduce strain on the faucet.
  • Inspect and replace washers regularly, typically once a year.
  • Avoid overtightening the faucet handle, as this can damage the washers.
  • Keep the faucet clean to prevent mineral buildup.
