How to Fix Bathtub Faucet
A leaking or malfunctioning bathtub faucet can be a frustrating problem. However, it's often a relatively simple issue that you can fix yourself with a few tools and a bit of time. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you fix a bathtub faucet:
1. Gather Tools and Materials
Before you start, gather the following tools and materials:
- Adjustable wrench or pliers
- Screwdriver
- Cartridge puller (if replacing the cartridge)
- Faucet washers
- O-rings
- Faucet lubricant
2. Turn Off Water Supply
Before doing any work on the faucet, turn off the water supply to the bathtub. There should be two shut-off valves under the sink, one for hot water and one for cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water.
3. Remove the Faucet Handle
Locate the set screw on the faucet handle and loosen it with a screwdriver. Once the set screw is loose, pull the handle straight up to remove it.
4. Remove the Cartridge or Stem
Once the handle is removed, you will see the cartridge or stem. If it is a cartridge, use a cartridge puller to remove it. If it is a stem, use an adjustable wrench or pliers to unscrew it.
5. Replace the Washer and O-Rings
Inspect the washer and O-rings on the cartridge or stem. If they are worn or damaged, replace them with new ones.
6. Reinstall the Cartridge or Stem
Insert the new cartridge or stem into the faucet body. If it is a cartridge, push it in until it clicks into place. If it is a stem, screw it in until it is hand-tight.
7. Reinstall the Faucet Handle
Place the faucet handle back on the stem and tighten the set screw.
8. Turn on Water Supply and Test
Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, your faucet is fixed.
Additional Tips:
- If you are replacing the cartridge, make sure to get the correct replacement cartridge for your faucet model.
- Apply faucet lubricant to all moving parts before reassembling the faucet.
- If you are still having problems with your faucet, call a licensed plumber.
