How to Change a Delta Bathtub Faucet Cartridge

A leaky or malfunctioning bathtub faucet can be a major inconvenience. If you're experiencing issues with your Delta bathtub faucet, it's likely that the cartridge needs to be replaced. Replacing a cartridge is a relatively simple and inexpensive repair that can be completed in about 30 minutes.

Here are the tools and materials you will need:

Replacement cartridge for Delta bathtub faucet
Phillips screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver
Adjustable wrench
New O-rings
Plumber's putty or Teflon tape

Before you begin, turn off the water supply to the faucet. To do this, locate the two valves under the sink and turn them clockwise until they are fully closed. Once the water is turned off, open the faucet to release any remaining water in the lines.

Now you can begin replacing the cartridge.

Remove the handle. There will be a small screw located on the back of the handle. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw and then pull the handle straight off.
Remove the cartridge retaining nut. Once the handle is removed, you will see a large nut that is holding the cartridge in place. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut and remove it.
Pull out the old cartridge. Once the nut is removed, you can pull the old cartridge straight out of the faucet body.
Inspect the O-rings. The O-rings are located on the old cartridge and they may need to be replaced if they are worn or damaged. Apply a little plumber's putty or Teflon tape to the new O-rings before installing them on the new cartridge.
Insert the new cartridge. Align the new cartridge with the faucet body and push it into place. Hand-tighten the cartridge retaining nut and then use the adjustable wrench to fully tighten it.
Reinstall the handle. Place the handle back on the faucet and secure it with the screw.
Turn on the water supply. Open the valves under the sink to turn the water back on. Check for any leaks around the cartridge.
