How to Change a Bathtub Faucet Cartridge

Replacing a bathtub faucet cartridge is a relatively simple task that can be completed in under an hour. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can save yourself the cost of hiring a plumber.

Materials You'll Need

*
  • New faucet cartridge (make sure it is compatible with your faucet)
  • *
  • Adjustable wrench
  • *
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • *
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • *
  • Bucket
  • *
  • Paper towels
  • Instructions

    1. Turn off the water supply. There should be two shut-off valves under the sink. Turn both valves clockwise until they are completely closed.

    2. Open the faucet. This will release any remaining water in the faucet and lines.

    3. Remove the faucet handles. On most faucets, the handles are held in place by a small screw. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw, then pull the handle straight off.

    4. Unscrew the cartridge retaining nut. This nut is usually located behind the faucet handles. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut and remove it.

    5. Pull out the old cartridge. Once the retaining nut is removed, you should be able to pull the old cartridge straight out of the faucet body.

    6. Insert the new cartridge. Align the new cartridge with the faucet body and push it into place. Make sure that the cartridge is fully seated.

    7. Tighten the cartridge retaining nut. Use the adjustable wrench to tighten the nut until it is snug.

    8. Reattach the faucet handles. Push the handles back onto the faucet body and tighten the screws.

    9. Turn on the water supply. Slowly turn on the shut-off valves under the sink. Check for any leaks around the faucet.

    10. Operate the faucet. Turn the faucet on and off several times to make sure that it is working properly.

    Tips

    *
  • If you are having difficulty removing the old cartridge, you can try using a flathead screwdriver to pry it out.
  • *
  • Be careful not to overtighten the cartridge retaining nut. This can damage the cartridge.
  • *
  • If you are replacing a cartridge in a faucet that is more than 10 years old, it is a good idea to replace the entire faucet. This will ensure that you have a leak-free faucet for many years to come.
