Essential Aspects of Fixing a Leaky Bathtub Faucet

A leaky bathtub faucet is not only annoying but it can also waste a significant amount of water. If you have a leaky faucet, it is important to fix it as soon as possible to prevent further damage and save money on your water bill.

Fixing a leaky bathtub faucet is not a difficult task, but it does require some basic plumbing skills. If you are not comfortable working on plumbing yourself, it is best to call a plumber. However, if you are confident in your abilities, you can follow the steps below to fix the leak yourself.

Tools and Materials You'll Need:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • New faucet washer
  • Plumber's putty
  • Rag

Instructions:

1. Turn off the water supply to the faucet.

There should be two shut-off valves under the sink. Turn both of these valves clockwise to turn off the water supply.

2. Remove the aerator.

The aerator is the small screen that is attached to the end of the faucet. It can be removed by unscrewing it by hand or with a wrench.

3. Remove the handle.

The handle is usually held in place by a screw. Remove the screw and then pull the handle straight up to remove it.

4. Remove the packing nut.

The packing nut is located around the base of the faucet stem. Use a wrench to loosen the packing nut and then remove it by hand.

5. Remove the faucet stem.

The faucet stem is the part of the faucet that controls the flow of water. Use a wrench to loosen the faucet stem and then pull it straight out to remove it.

6. Inspect the faucet stem and washer.

The faucet stem and washer are the most common causes of leaks. Inspect them for any signs of wear or damage. If the washer is worn or damaged, it will need to be replaced.

7. Replace the faucet washer.

To replace the faucet washer, simply remove the old washer and replace it with a new one. Make sure that the new washer is the same size and type as the old washer.

8. Reassemble the faucet.

Once you have replaced the faucet washer, reassemble the faucet in the reverse order of disassembly. Tighten all of the nuts and screws securely.

9. Turn on the water supply and check for leaks.

Once the faucet is reassembled, turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, you have successfully fixed the leaky faucet.

By following these steps, you can easily fix a leaky bathtub faucet yourself. If you are not comfortable working on plumbing yourself, it is best to call a plumber.
