How to Fix a Bathtub Faucet Handle

A dripping or leaking bathtub faucet handle can be a nuisance and waste a lot of water. Fortunately, it is a relatively simple repair that you can do yourself with a few basic tools.

Tools and Materials:

Phillips screwdriver
Allen wrench (if necessary)
Replacement faucet handle (if necessary)
Plumber's putty (optional)

Step 1: Turn off the water supply to the faucet.

Locate the shut-off valves beneath the sink or behind the access panel in the wall. Turn them clockwise to close them.

Step 2: Remove the handle cover.

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws holding the handle cover in place. The cover may be made of plastic or metal.

Step 3: Remove the handle.

Once the cover is removed, you should see a screw or Allen screw on the shaft of the handle. Use the appropriate tool to loosen it and remove the handle.

Step 4: Inspect the handle.

Look for any signs of damage or wear on the handle. If the handle is cracked or broken, it will need to be replaced.

Step 5: Replace the handle.

If the handle is not damaged, simply reattach it to the shaft and tighten the screw or Allen screw.

Step 6: Replace the handle cover.

Align the handle cover with the faucet and screw it back into place.

Step 7: Turn on the water supply.

Slowly turn on the shut-off valves to allow water to flow through the faucet. Check for any leaks around the handle.

Step 8: Apply plumber's putty (optional).

If you notice any small leaks around the base of the handle, apply a small amount of plumber's putty to the threads of the handle.

Troubleshooting:

If you are still experiencing a leak after following these steps, the problem may be with the cartridge or other internal components of the faucet. In this case, it is best to call a plumber for further assistance.
