How to Fix a Slow Draining Bathtub: A Comprehensive Guide

A slow-draining bathtub can be a frustrating and time-consuming problem. Not only does it make it difficult to take a relaxing bath, but it can also lead to standing water, which can breed bacteria and cause unpleasant odors. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to fix a slow-draining bathtub, ranging from simple DIY solutions to more complex repairs.

1. Check the Drain Stopper

The first step in fixing a slow-draining bathtub is to check the drain stopper. Hair, soap scum, and other debris can easily accumulate around the stopper, causing it to stick and prevent water from draining properly. To clean the drain stopper, simply remove it from the drain and rinse it thoroughly with hot water. You can also use a mild detergent or a commercial drain cleaner to remove stubborn buildup. Once the stopper is clean, reinsert it into the drain and test the water flow. If the water still drains slowly, the problem may be deeper in the drain.

2. Clean the Drain Trap

The drain trap is a U-shaped pipe located underneath the bathtub drain. It is designed to trap debris and prevent it from entering the sewer system. Over time, the drain trap can become clogged with hair, soap scum, and other debris, which can slow down the flow of water. To clean the drain trap, place a bucket underneath the drain to catch any water that spills out. Then, use a wrench to loosen the slip nuts that hold the drain trap in place. Once the drain trap is loose, remove it from the drain and empty it into the bucket. Use a wire brush or a drain snake to remove any stubborn clogs from the inside of the drain trap. Once the drain trap is clean, reattach it to the drain and tighten the slip nuts.

3. Use a Chemical Drain Cleaner

If the slow-draining bathtub is caused by a clog that is deeper in the drain, you may need to use a chemical drain cleaner. Chemical drain cleaners are available at most hardware stores. Be sure to read the label carefully before using a chemical drain cleaner, as some products can be harsh and corrosive. Follow the instructions on the product label and pour the drain cleaner into the bathtub drain. Allow the drain cleaner to sit for the amount of time specified on the label, then flush the drain with hot water. If the clog is still not cleared, you may need to repeat the process.

4. Snake the Drain

If a chemical drain cleaner does not work, you may need to snake the drain. A drain snake is a long, flexible tool that can be inserted into the drain to break up clogs. To snake the drain, insert the snake into the drain and turn the handle to advance the snake into the drain. Continue to advance the snake until you feel it hit the clog. Then, turn the handle in the opposite direction to loosen the clog. Once the clog is loosened, flush the drain with hot water to remove the debris.

5. Call a Plumber

If you have tried all of the above methods and the bathtub is still draining slowly, it is time to call a plumber. A plumber will be able to diagnose the problem and recommend the best course of action. The plumber may need to use specialized tools or equipment to clear the clog or repair the drain.
