How to Replace a Bathtub Faucet Cartridge

A dripping faucet can waste thousands of gallons of water each year, not to mention the constant annoyance of the dripping sound. If your bathtub faucet is dripping, it's likely that the cartridge needs to be replaced. Replacing a faucet cartridge is a relatively simple task that can be completed in about 30 minutes, with the right tools and materials.

Tools and Materials You'll Need:

  • Replacement faucet cartridge
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Allen wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flashlight (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Turn off the water supply. Locate the shut-off valves underneath the sink or behind the bathtub and turn them off clockwise. Open the faucet to release any remaining water in the lines.

2. Remove the handle. Most bathtub faucet handles are secured by a small screw or Allen screw. Use an Allen wrench or screwdriver to remove the screw and pull off the handle.

3. Remove the cartridge retaining nut. Under the handle, you will see a large nut that secures the cartridge. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut and remove it.

4. Remove the old cartridge. Carefully pull the old cartridge straight out of the faucet body. If it's stuck, you can use a flashlight to look inside and see if there is a small screw holding it in place. Remove the screw and then pull out the cartridge.

5. Install the new cartridge. Orient the new cartridge correctly and insert it into the faucet body. Gently push it in until it seats properly.

6. Reinstall the cartridge retaining nut. Place the cartridge retaining nut over the cartridge and tighten it securely using an adjustable wrench.

7. Reinstall the handle. Place the handle back on the faucet and secure it with the screw or Allen screw.

8. Turn on the water supply. Open the shut-off valves to turn on the water supply. Check for any leaks around the faucet. If there are no leaks, the cartridge replacement was successful.

Tips:

  • Before starting, take a picture of the old cartridge so you can reference it when installing the new one.
  • Don't overtighten the cartridge retaining nut.
  • If you have difficulty removing the cartridge, try using a pair of pliers to gently pull it out.
  • If you're not comfortable replacing the faucet cartridge yourself, call a plumber.
