Changing a Bathtub Faucet Handle: A Step-by-Step Guide

Replacing a bathtub faucet handle is a relatively simple task that can be completed in under an hour. With a few basic tools and some follow-along instructions, you can easily update the look of your faucet or replace a faulty or worn-out handle.

Materials you'll need:

New bathtub faucet handle
Adjustable wrench or pliers
Phillips or flathead screwdriver
Allen wrench (if necessary)
Plumber's puddy (optional)

Steps:

Step 1: Turn off the water supply. Locate the shut-off valves beneath the sink or behind the faucet and turn them off. This will prevent water from flowing while you work on the faucet.

Step 2: Remove the old handle. Most handles are secured by a screw or bolt located underneath the handle. Use the appropriate wrench or screwdriver to loosen the screw or bolt and remove the old handle.

Step 3: Inspect the valve stem. Once the handle is removed, inspect the valve stem. If the valve stem is damaged or corroded, it may need to be replaced. Remove the screw or bolt holding the valve stem in place and replace it with a new valve stem.

Step 4: Apply plumber's putty. If the faucet is leaking around the base of the handle, apply a thin bead of plumber's putty around the base of the new handle before installing it.

Step 5: Install the new handle. Align the new handle with the valve stem and insert the screw or bolt. Tighten the screw or bolt until the handle is secure, but do not overtighten.

Step 6: Turn on the water supply. Once the new handle is installed, turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the screw or bolt on the handle.
