Removing Bathtub Drain: A Comprehensive Guide

Step 1: Gather Your Tools

Step 2: Remove the Drain Stopper

If your bathtub has a pop-up stopper, start by removing it. Insert the drain stopper wrench into the drain hole and turn it counterclockwise to unscrew the stopper.

Step 3: Remove the Drain Cover

Once the stopper is removed, you'll see the drain cover. Use channel locks to gently loosen the drain cover and lift it out.

Step 4: Unscrew the Drain Pipe

Beneath the drain cover, you'll find the drain pipe. Use the plumber's wrench to unscrew the drain pipe from the bathtub. Be careful not to overtighten it, as you could damage the pipe.

Step 5: Remove the Putty and Drain Assembly

Once the drain pipe is loose, use a putty knife to scrape away any old putty around the drain assembly. Then, gently pull up on the drain assembly to remove it from the bathtub.

Step 6: Replace the Drain Assembly (Optional)

If you're replacing the drain assembly, apply a bead of plumber's putty around the rim of the new drain assembly. Carefully insert the drain assembly into the bathtub and press down firmly to secure it.

Step 7: Reinstall the Drain Pipe

Screw the drain pipe back onto the bathtub, tightening it securely with the plumber's wrench. Ensure that the pipe is properly aligned and not cross-threaded.

Step 8: Reinstall the Drain Cover

Place the drain cover back over the drain pipe and tighten it in place with channel locks.

Step 9: Reinstall the Drain Stopper (Optional)

If you removed the drain stopper, screw it back into place using the drain stopper wrench.
