How to Fix a Leaking Bathtub Faucet: A Comprehensive Guide

A leaky bathtub faucet can be a frustrating and costly problem. Not only does it waste water, but it can also lead to water damage in your bathroom. Fortunately, fixing a leaking bathtub faucet is usually a simple task that you can do yourself with a few basic tools. Step 1: Gather Your Tools and Materials Before you start, you'll need to gather the following tools and materials: * Adjustable wrench * Phillips head screwdriver * Flat head screwdriver * Pliers * Teflon tape * Replacement faucet washer * Rags * Bucket Step 2: Shut Off the Water Supply Before you do anything else, you need to shut off the water supply to your bathtub faucet. This will prevent water from leaking while you're working. To shut off the water supply, locate the shutoff valves for your bathtub faucet. These valves are usually located under the sink or behind the toilet. Once you've found the shutoff valves, turn them clockwise until they're completely closed. Step 3: Remove the Faucet Handle Once the water supply is turned off, you can remove the faucet handle. To do this, use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws that are holding the handle in place. Once the screws are removed, you should be able to pull the handle straight off. Step 4: Remove the Cartridge The cartridge is the part of the faucet that controls the flow of water. To remove the cartridge, use the adjustable wrench to loosen the packing nut that is holding it in place. Once the packing nut is loose, you should be able to pull the cartridge straight out. Step 5: Replace the Faucet Washer The faucet washer is a small, round piece of rubber that helps to create a seal between the cartridge and the faucet body. If the faucet washer is worn or damaged, it can cause a leak. To replace the faucet washer, simply remove the old washer and install the new one. Make sure that the new washer is the same size and shape as the old one. Step 6: Reinstall the Cartridge Once you've replaced the faucet washer, you can reinstall the cartridge. To do this, simply insert the cartridge back into the faucet body and tighten the packing nut. Make sure that the packing nut is tight enough to create a seal, but not so tight that it damages the cartridge. Step 7: Reinstall the Faucet Handle Once the cartridge is reinstalled, you can reinstall the faucet handle. To do this, simply align the handle with the stem and push it into place. Once the handle is in place, use the Phillips head screwdriver to replace the screws that you removed earlier. Step 8: Turn On the Water Supply Once the faucet handle is reinstalled, you can turn on the water supply. To do this, simply turn the shutoff valves counterclockwise until they're fully open. Check the faucet for leaks. If there are no leaks, you're finished!
