How to Remove a Bathtub Drain
Removing a bathtub drain is a relatively simple plumbing task that can be completed in a few minutes with the right tools. Here are the essential steps to follow:
Step 1: Gather Your Tools
You will need the following tools for this task:
- Adjustable wrench
- Bucket or basin
- Cloth or rag
Step 2: Shut Off the Water Supply
It is important to shut off the water supply to the bathtub before you begin. Locate the shut-off valves under the sink or behind the bathtub and turn them clockwise to close them.
Step 3: Remove the Overflow Plate
The overflow plate is the small, round plate located on the side of the bathtub near the top. Use a cloth or rag to hold the plate and unscrew it by turning it counterclockwise. Once the plate is removed, you will see the overflow tube behind it.
Step 4: Loosen the Drain Nut
The drain nut is the large, round nut located at the base of the drain. Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the nut by turning it counterclockwise. Do not remove the nut completely at this point.
Step 5: Remove the Drain Assembly
Once the drain nut is loose, you can carefully remove the drain assembly by pulling it up and out of the drain hole. The drain assembly consists of the drain stopper, the strainer, and the gasket.
Step 6: Clean the Drain Hole
While the drain assembly is removed, take the opportunity to clean the drain hole. Remove any hair, soap scum, or other debris with a cloth or rag.
Step 7: Reassemble the Drain Assembly
Insert the new drain assembly into the drain hole and hand-tighten the gasket. Then, place the drain stopper and strainer into the assembly and hand-tighten them as well.
Step 8: Tighten the Drain Nut
Use the adjustable wrench to fully tighten the drain nut. Do not overtighten, as this could damage the nut or the drain.
Step 9: Install the Overflow Plate
Place the overflow plate over the overflow tube and screw it on by turning it clockwise. Tighten the plate until it is snug.
Step 10: Turn on the Water Supply
Turn on the shut-off valves under the sink or behind the bathtub to restore the water supply. Check the drain for any leaks and tighten the drain nut further if necessary.
